The Floralis Generica is a metal sculpture located in United Nations Square of the Buenos Aires City, gifts to the city by the Argentinian architect Eduardo Catalano.
The sculpture is standing in the center of a park of four acres of wooded boundaries, and situated above a reflecting pool, which apart from fulfilling its aesthetic function, protects it. Represents a large flower made of stainless steel with aluminum skeleton and reinforced concrete, which looks into the sky, extending its six petals. It weighs 18 tons and is 23 meters high.
One of the characteristics of the flower is an electrical system that automatically opens and closes the petals depending the time of day. At night the flower closes emanating a red glow from the inside to rebirth open in the morning the next day.
According to the author, the architect Eduardo Catalano, Floralis means that belongs to the flora and therefore the flowers, and Generic derives from the concept "gender" and indicates that it represents all the flowers in the world.
